The Ib is one of the five concepts of the soul; the heart. It is a collection of a persons good and bad deeds. The Ib is weighed against the feather of truth on the scales of justice in Osiris' throne room to classify the person's afterlife. If the person's Ib is pure, the soul will experience afterlife paradise. If it is not, the Ib will be eaten by Ammit the Devourer .
To ancient Egyptians, the heart was the seat of emotion, thought, will and intention. This is evidenced by the many expressions in the Egyptian language which incorporate the word ib,Awt-ib: happiness (literally, wideness of heart), Xak-ib: estranged (literally, truncated of heart). This word was transcribed by Wallis Budge as Ab.
